Alittle over two years ago, I launched my online portfolio, kodisign.com. This was the first time I had created an entire website from scratch.
Aside from the fact that everybody (including myself) had trouble spelling kodisign, I think it was a pretty solid little site. But I’ve gradually outgrown it. My own visual Identity has evolved, as have my web design, page layout and typographic abilities, and for more than a year now, I’ve been pining for something new. Now, at long last, I am proud to announce that koditschek.com has arrived!
Demonstrating Sophisticated Technological Capabilities
From a technical standpoint, this site is built with standards compliant, handcrafted xhtml and css, integrated into the Expressionengine content management system. I’m using some custom jQuery for the menu behaviors, and an assortment of font rendering Techniques. The body copy, lists, drop caps, and links are set in Lekton, While titles and other details use Volkorn Italic, both from the Google font Directory. The small section headers are set in DIN, using Cufon font replacement.
Koditschek.com also has a subtle feature. Every hour, The color gradually changes from a deep purple at midnight to a light blue at high noon (Central Standard Time). Why do this? Well, a lot of my personal work is engaged with explorations into history and representations of time, so I though it would be conceptually appropriate if my personal website alluded to the passage of time. In addition, I missed the purple from my old Identity, and wanted to connect the new with the old somehow. But more importantly, I did it because I could, and I think it’s awesome.
Now, although I wish I could take full credit for this Idea, I must acknowledge my close friend Anthony Zinni who had the stroke of imagination when I shifted the color from blue to purple while he was previewing the design. Thank you Tony!
Guided by an expanded perspective
For those familiar with my old site, you will find contained within these web pages an entirely new body of work. However, koditschek.com is intended to be more than just a flashy showcase of my graphic design work. It represents a re-thinking on my part of what a personal site is supposed to do. I’ve realized that displaying a body of past work is only part of the designer’s task. The real challenge is to supplement this work with an ongoing personal narrative, to help connect these static images with a living, breathing, branded human personality. Now, as a self respecting designer, I do believe in the ability of my work to stand on it’s own. But even so, I think it’s important to distinguish what I do and who I am from what can be found in places like crowdspring or 99designs.
With this end in mind, I have structured the site’s layout around a central event feed, and have made the portfolio section play a supporting role. For this scheme to work well, I will have to keep up an pretty active blog, something I’ve never attempted prior. I’m hoping to be able to post new entries roughly once a week on what I’m working on or participating in, or maybe some event I’ve seen to that I want to discuss. We’ll see how it goes.
